The warm Southern California sun is streaming through your windows, and suddenly you notice the dust on the blinds, the grime on the baseboards, and that mysterious stain on the carpet you have been ignoring since December. Spring is nature's way of telling us it is time for a fresh start — and that includes our homes.
We have been cleaning homes in Orange County for over 20 years, and this is everything we have learned about doing spring cleaning properly in one place: ten tips that make the biggest difference, a few hacks that genuinely save time, and a complete room-by-room checklist you can work through at the end.
1. Start With a Plan, Not a Mop
The biggest mistake people make is diving straight into cleaning without a game plan. Before you grab a single sponge, walk through your home room by room and make a list of what needs attention. Prioritize the areas that bother you most — you will feel accomplished faster and stay motivated.
Work from top to bottom in every room. Dust ceiling fans, light fixtures and top shelves first, then counters and furniture, and floors last. Dust falls, so working downward means you only clean each surface once instead of twice.
2. Declutter Before You Clean
Cleaning around clutter is like mowing around rocks — you are just making more work for yourself. Go through each room with three bags or boxes: keep, donate, and toss. If you have not used it in a year, it is probably time to let it go.
Pay special attention to these common clutter magnets:
- Kitchen counters and junk drawers
- Bathroom cabinets and under-sink storage with expired products
- The pantry — check expiration dates while you are there
- Closets with clothes you no longer wear
- The garage (yes, the garage counts)
3. Deep Clean Your Kitchen — Beyond the Surface
Your kitchen works hard every day, and spring is the time to show it some love. Go beyond wiping counters:
- Inside the oven: Remove the racks, soak them in hot soapy water, and scrub the interior with a baking soda paste
- Inside the fridge: Empty it, wipe down every shelf and drawer, and throw out anything past its date
- Behind the fridge: Pull it out and vacuum the coils — this also improves energy efficiency
- Range hood filter: Take it out and soak it in hot water with dish soap. A clogged filter pushes grease back onto your cabinets
- Microwave and dishwasher: Clean the microwave inside, and run the empty dishwasher on a hot cycle with a cup of white vinegar on the top rack
- Cabinet fronts and backsplash: Grease builds up near the stove. Start with warm water and dish soap on a microfiber cloth — strong degreasers can strip the finish on painted or older cabinets, so test anything stronger on a hidden spot first
Kitchen sponges hold more bacteria than almost anything else in the house. Replace them every couple of weeks, or disinfect a thoroughly wet sponge in the microwave for about a minute — it must be soaking wet, never use one with a metal scrubbing side, and let it cool before you touch it.
4. Tackle the Bathrooms With the Right Products
Hard water stains, soap scum and mildew love Orange County bathrooms. Here is how to fight back:
- Spray ceramic tile and grout with a vinegar-water solution, let it sit for 15 minutes, then scrub. Never use vinegar on marble, travertine or limestone — it etches natural stone permanently. Use a pH-neutral cleaner there instead
- Remove hard water marks from shower doors and faucets, then dry them — drying is what stops the marks coming back
- Clean behind the toilet and around the base
- Take the exhaust fan cover off and wash it — a dusty fan barely moves air, and a bathroom that never dries grows mildew
- Wash the bath mats and replace the shower curtain liner — both are inexpensive and make the whole room feel new
- Check the caulk around the tub and sink, and re-caulk where it has cracked or gone black
Pro tip: Keep a squeegee in the shower and wipe the glass after the last shower of the day. This one habit can cut your bathroom cleaning time in half.
5. Refresh Your Bedrooms for Better Sleep
Your bedroom should be a sanctuary. Start with your mattress — vacuum it thoroughly, sprinkle baking soda over it, let it sit for 30 minutes, then vacuum again. This freshens the fabric and lifts dust.
While the mattress is airing out:
- Wash all bedding, including comforters, pillows and mattress protectors
- Flip or rotate your mattress
- Dust nightstands, dressers, lamps and headboards
- Clean under the bed (you might be surprised what you find)
- Wipe down mirrors, and wash or dry clean curtains and drapes
6. Do Not Forget the Windows
Clean windows make an incredible difference in how your home feels. In Orange County, our sunshine deserves clean glass to stream through.
Use a solution of equal parts water and white vinegar with a drop of dish soap, and wipe with a microfiber cloth for a streak-free finish. Save it for an overcast day: direct sun dries the solution before you can wipe it off, and that is where most streaks come from. Clean both inside and outside — you will be amazed at how much brighter your rooms look.
7. Show Your Floors Some Love
Different floors need different care:
- Hardwood: Vacuum first (vacuuming catches more dust than sweeping), then mop with a hardwood-safe cleaner and a barely damp mop. Never leave standing water
- Tile: Focus on the grout lines with a grout brush and baking soda paste
- Carpet: Vacuum slowly in two directions — most of the dirt is at the base of the fibers
- Luxury vinyl and laminate: Use a damp (not wet) microfiber mop with a gentle cleaner, and never a steam mop — heat can lift the edges and void the warranty
Use two buckets when you mop. One holds clean solution, the other is only for wringing out the dirty mop. With a single bucket you are simply spreading dirty water across the floor.
8. Clean the Things You Always Forget
Some spots get overlooked every single cleaning session. Make this spring the time you finally tackle them:
- Light switches, door handles and door frames — touched daily, rarely cleaned
- Baseboards and window sills — run a damp cloth along them and you will see the difference immediately
- Ceiling fan blades — slide a pillowcase over each blade to capture the dust without dropping it everywhere
- Air vents, returns and the HVAC filter — vacuum the grilles and replace the filter; spring pollen season is the right moment
- Behind and under furniture — the sofa hides more dust than any shelf
- The laundry room — clean the lint trap and dryer vent, and wipe the washing machine drum and door gasket where mildew hides
- Remote controls and electronics — wipe these high-touch items with a disinfecting wipe
- Trash cans — wash them out with soap and water, then dry completely
9. Freshen Up Your Outdoor Spaces
Orange County weather means we use our outdoor spaces year-round. Give your patio, deck or balcony a good sweep and wash. Wipe down outdoor furniture, clean the grill, and shake out any outdoor rugs or cushions.
Do not forget your front entry — it is the first thing guests see. Sweep the porch, wash the front door, clean the doormat, and organize the shoe pile.

10. Know When to Call the Pros
There is no shame in asking for help. A professional deep clean covers in a few hours what would take most people an entire weekend — and it is the easiest way to start the season with the whole house done at once. Our deep clean covers the places a regular visit does not:
- Inside the oven and fridge
- Inside cabinets and drawers
- Window interiors and tracks
- Baseboards, door frames, light fixtures and fan blades
- Move-in and move-out cleans, and post-construction cleanup

Baking Soda: The Cheapest Cleaner You Own
Before you buy a specialty product, try baking soda:
- Sprinkle it on a mattress for 30 minutes to deodorize, then vacuum
- Mix it with a little water into a paste for grout lines and oven interiors
- Use it to lift stuck-on food from pots and pans
- Keep an open box in the fridge to absorb odors
- Pour it down a slow drain followed by white vinegar and hot water to freshen it
