Laguna Beach has been a working art town for a hundred years, and it shows inside the houses. A far higher proportion of homes here have real paintings on the walls, original ceramics on the shelves and studio space somewhere in the building than anywhere else in the county — and that changes what a careful cleaner does.
Our rule is simple: we do not touch the art. Canvases are never wiped, never sprayed near, never dusted with a cloth. Frames get a dry, soft pass on the top edge only, and nothing goes near the surface of a painting. Glazed and framed works get glass cleaner on the cloth, never sprayed at the frame, so nothing runs under the glass.
Ceramics, glass and sculpture on open shelves are dusted in place where we can, and where we genuinely cannot reach around a piece, we leave it and say so afterwards rather than picking it up. If you would rather we did handle particular pieces, tell us which and how, once.
The older housing here is small, steep and idiosyncratic — 1920s and 30s cottages on narrow lots, with original wood floors, small-paned windows and stairs everywhere. Those floors get barely damp microfibre and drying behind, never a wet mop. Small-paned windows get done by hand with cleaner kept off the wood.
There is also a practical matter nobody mentions: parking. Tell us where we can actually put a vehicle when you book, and we build the walk into the time rather than discovering it on the morning.
Close to the water, salt films the glass and holds moisture, so windows haze early and tracks and hardware corrode years ahead of inland fittings. Salt gets dissolved and dried, not wiped.
